The city Calgary is located in the southern part of Alberta province in Canada. The city is located in the Alberta grassland region; approximately at a distance of 50miles east from the front side of the Canadian Rockies .thus the geographical location greatly influences the weather for Calgary. A humid dry continental type of climate is experienced by the people in Calgary. The winters are long, dry and cold and the summers are relatively shorter and moderately warm. The elevation of the city and the nearness of Calgary to the Rocky Mountains greatly affect the weather for Calgary. The coldness of winters may make things uncomfortable, but Chinook winds which are warm and dry in nature regularly blows through the city which brings the people here some sort of relief from the cold. These winds can raise the temperature by almost 15 degree Celsius within a span of few hours and its effects are known to last several days. In Calgary extremes of temperature prevails where it has experienced a record of -45 degrees Celsius which is the lowest and the highest record being 36 degree Celsius. According to the reports of Environment Canada the daily average temperature in July is 16 degrees Celsius while in January it is about -9 degree Celsius. The city being located at high altitude and highly arid region, the summer evenings are pleasantly cool. The average relative humidity during calgarian summers is 45% while in winter it is 55%.humidity rarely plays a role in influencing the temperature during summers here. Calgary is among the sunniest cities of Canada. The average annual sunshine duration is approximately about 2400 hours. Precipitation occurs both in the form of rain and snow. Precipitation mainly occurs in the months of May, June, July and august with maximum average rainfall being in the moth of June. Droughts may also occur here and may last for several months. The precipitation increases from east to west.
Every year a layer of snow more than 1cm deep lasts for about 88days in Calgary. Another characteristic feature of the weather for Calgary is that thunderstorms occur at an average of about 22days per year. Damaging hailstorms are observed in the city at intervals of few years. The weather for Calgary is highly variable and so the months are not so well defined. Spring lasts for the months April and May, summer lasts from June to august, autumn lasts for September and October, and finally winter lasts from November to March.
